Will Disability Come in the Way of Success? Stephen Hawking

Stephen Hawking is a living proof for disabled – Inspiration to millions

Stephen Hawking is not a born disabled and his disability did not come in his way of success.  Till the age of 17 he was normal like any other child, did not care the symptoms of his disability till the age of 21. He also kept the seriousness of his illness to himself and  his father noticed the symptoms of  trip and fall, or slur of speech and took him to medical investigations. The Oxford student was then diagnosed suffering from ‘amyotrophic lateral sclerosis’  (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). In a very simple sense, the nerves that controlled his muscles were shutting down. From then he was never a normal man.

Stephen HawkingStephen Hawking is a physicist. His contribution to block holes had universal appreciation. Disability never came in his way of work and contribution to science. See the picture adjacent and are you not inspired with this amazing man never ever worried about his physical illness and laughing. He is an author for  several popular science books. To name few

  • My Brief History
  • The Grand Design
  • A Brief History of Time
  • A Briefer History of Time
  • George and the Unbreakable Code
  • George and the Big Bang
  • George’s Cosmic Treasure Hunt
  • George’s Secret Key to the Universe
  • The Universe in a Nutshell
  • Black Holes and Baby Universes
  • On the Shoulders of Giants
  • The Large Scale Structure of Space-Time
  • God Created the Integers

God Created The Integers is all about mathematical discoveries of legends like Euclid, Georg Cantor, Kurt Godel, Augustin Cauchy, Bernard Riemann and Alan Turing. This book is his personal choice.

How Stephen Hawking did these miracles and still doing?

All age from 21 years Stephen Hawking is on  wheelchair  and dependent on a computerised voice system for communication. Stephen Hawking is married and continues a happy married life with  three children and three grandchildren. He continues his his research into theoretical physics. He travels extensively and gives public lectures and still wants to make space travelone day.

How Stephen Hawking Works from his wheel chair?

Stephen Hawking work technique with the disability is  mystery nor a miracle . It is the a great discovery of ‘SwiftKey’ keyboard is what makes the scientist communicate with his computer. The professor with his motor neurone disease uses SwiftKey which is activated by the muscle in the cheek, since he can only move his cheek.SwiftKey personal language model understand professor’s keystrokes into whole words and contextual words, analyze content.

Joe Osborne, SwiftKey’s SDK team lead, who led our work on this project, said: “It has been a wonderful experience to work so closely with Professor Hawking and his team on this project, integrating our technology into his communications system. SwiftKey’s predictive technology learns from each individual user, gaining insights from their personal language style.

To conclude:

All disabled can not be Stephen Hawking, but a determined person can create history and be a role model to younger generations. Disability is not  a hurdle to success. In Stephen’s own words “however difficult life may seem, there is always something you can do and succeed at”
